Could ADHD explain what I am experiencing?

Maybe you have always been the person who loses the thread halfway through a meeting. Or who starts five things before lunch and finishes none of them. Somewhere along the way, someone mentioned ADHD, and now it is something your mind keeps circling back to.

Wondering about it is not the same as having it. Plenty of things cause poor concentration and restlessness, and a good assessment is as much about ruling things out as ruling them in.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition. It affects how attention, activity levels and impulses are regulated, and it usually brings strengths alongside the difficulties: hyperfocus on work that genuinely interests you, quick problem solving, energy when it matters. In adults it often shows up as:

  • Losing track of time, underestimating how long things take, chronic lateness
  • Forgetting appointments, bills, replies to messages you meant to send
  • Starting tasks easily but stalling before the last ten per cent
  • Strong emotional reactions that pass quickly but cost you afterwards
  • Restlessness, talking over people, saying yes before you have thought it through
  • Appraisals, deadlines or a household that quietly stopped running smoothly

Our online adult ADHD assessment is for people aged 18 and over who are living in Ireland, since the report is written for Irish GPs, employers and colleges. If you are under 18, currently unwell in a way that needs urgent care, or dealing with active addiction or a significant intellectual disability, an assessment through the HSE or a service that can see you in person is usually the better route. We will tell you honestly if that is the case.

Already diagnosed? You do not need another assessment. Our online ADHD therapy is the right starting point, and your GP or prescriber handles medication reviews.

How does an online ADHD assessment work?

Everything happens by secure video, so you can attend from home, from the office, or from a parked car if that is the only private half hour you have. There are no waiting rooms and nothing to install.

Stage What happens
1. Booking and eligibility You book online in a couple of minutes. No GP letter needed. We check the service suits you.
2. Pre-screening consultation A short video session to hear what has been going on and explain the process.
3. Questionnaires Standardised ADHD rating scales for you, and often one for someone who knows you well.
4. Clinical assessment A structured interview by video. Sometimes split across two appointments.
5. Results and report The outcome explained to you in plain words, followed by a written report.

The interview itself covers how things are for you now, what school and childhood were like, how you manage day to day at work and at home, your physical and mental health, family history, and other explanations that can look a lot like ADHD. Anxiety, low mood, poor sleep, thyroid problems and long-term stress all affect concentration. That part matters.

Useful things to gather beforehand, if you have them:

  • Photo ID and your GP's name and practice
  • Old school reports or exam results
  • Any previous psychology, psychiatry or educational reports
  • A list of current medication
  • A parent, partner or close friend willing to complete an observer questionnaire

Questionnaires and any computerised attention tests are supporting information only. NICE guideline NG87 is clear that a diagnosis should not rest on rating scales or observation alone. If something is missing or unclear, we will ask for more before reaching a conclusion rather than guess.

Not sure if this is the right fit?

A first session is just a conversation.

Who will carry out my assessment?

Your assessment is completed by a clinician with specific training and experience in adult ADHD. In Ireland, a diagnosis of this kind is made by a suitably qualified clinician such as a psychiatrist registered with the Medical Council or a psychologist registered with CORU. Only a registered medical practitioner can prescribe ADHD medication, which is why we suggest involving your GP early if that is a road you might want to go down.

You can look up any clinician's registration yourself. Ask us for their name and registration number before you book and we will give it to you.

  • Sessions run on encrypted video. Nothing is recorded without your written consent.
  • Your records are held in line with GDPR, overseen in Ireland by the Data Protection Commission.
  • Your report goes to you. It goes to anyone else only when you ask us to send it.

The approach is neurodiversity-informed, which in practice just means we are as interested in what you are good at as in what has been going wrong.

Can an online assessment give me an official ADHD diagnosis?

Yes, when it follows recognised clinical standards and is carried out by a qualified clinician. Being on video does not change the standard applied.

Online ADHD quiz Clinical assessment
Takes Two minutes Several hours across stages
Based on Your answers today Interview, childhood evidence, observer reports, health history
Result A suggestion to look further A diagnosis, or a clear explanation of why not

A quiz can be a useful nudge. It cannot diagnose anything. Reliability in a real assessment comes from triangulating several sources: what you describe, what someone who knew you as a child remembers, standardised measures, and whether the difficulties were present early and show up in more than one part of your life.

No assessment is perfect. Sometimes the answer is that the criteria are not met, and something else explains what you have been struggling with. That is a genuinely useful outcome, not a wasted one.

What happens after an ADHD diagnosis?

We talk you through the outcome in a live session first, so you can ask questions, then send the written report. It sets out what was assessed, the conclusion, and specific recommendations for work, study and home.

  • Understanding how ADHD actually works for you, which for many people is the biggest relief of all
  • Practical strategies for time, task initiation and the pile of unfinished things
  • CBT for the anxiety, low mood or harsh self-talk that often sits alongside it
  • Support documents for reasonable accommodations at work or in college, with AHEAD a good resource for students
  • Medication, if you and a prescriber decide it fits

Medication is one option, not the whole picture. Where you want to explore it, an optional follow-up session produces a report for prescribing purposes. Your GP or a psychiatrist then handles physical health checks, the prescription itself and reviews of how it is working and what side effects you notice. Ongoing prescribing, renewals and annual reviews sit with that prescriber and are not part of the assessment fee.

Diagnosed somewhere else and looking for therapy or support here? Send us the report and we will pick up from there. We do not need to reassess you.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a private online ADHD assessment cost in Ireland?

The full fee, what each stage covers, and the separate charge for the optional medication report are all shown before you pay anything. Private assessment fees vary considerably across Irish providers, so ask any service for the total, not the deposit. Some health insurance policies contribute towards psychological assessment, so it is worth ringing your insurer. ADHD Ireland is a good independent starting point if you want to compare routes, including the public one.

How long does the assessment process take?

Most people complete the appointments across a few weeks rather than in one sitting, depending on how quickly questionnaires and any old school reports come back. The current waiting time for a first appointment and the turnaround for your written report are confirmed to you in writing when you book, so there are no surprises.

Can an online ADHD diagnosis be shared with my GP or used for workplace or college supports?

Yes, with your consent we will send the report to your GP, and you can share it with an employer, a college disability officer or the Access Office. Worth being straight with you: whether a report is accepted for a particular purpose, prescribing included, is decided by the organisation receiving it and depends on the assessing clinician's qualifications. If you know where the report needs to go, tell us early and we will confirm what they require.

How can I book an online ADHD assessment?

Booking takes about two minutes and there is no account to set up. Evening and weekend appointments are available, and we work with people right across Ireland, not just the cities.

  • You will get an emailed confirmation with your appointment time and a secure video link
  • Questionnaires and a consent form arrive by email to complete beforehand
  • Payment terms are set out at the point of booking
  • Already diagnosed and looking for support instead? Start with ADHD therapy

If you are not sure whether this is the right service for you, get in touch before booking and ask. We would rather tell you honestly that something else suits you better. And if you decide to wait, that is fine too. Whenever you feel ready.

When you're ready, we're here.

Booking takes about two minutes, and you can reschedule any time up to 24 hours before.
